Many people who seek hypnotherapy are struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, or a lack of self-belief. While these issues often manifest in adulthood, their roots frequently lie in earlier life experiences. As a clinical hypnotherapist, I use a combination of techniques including regression, parts work, and personalised visualisation recordings to help clients uncover and heal the origin of their issue.
Hypnotherapy works so well – and so quickly – because hypnosis acts as an amplifier of experience. In a deeply relaxed state, you’re able to access the subconscious mind, where your core beliefs, emotions, and patterns are stored. This is where real, lasting change happens. The subconscious holds the root of the problem, but also the key to positive change.
Here’s a case study that illustrates how this can work for anxiety.
Client background “Laura” (name changed) came to see me because of chronic anxiety that had recently begun to interfere with her work and relationships. Although she was highly capable and outwardly confident, she often felt overwhelmed by fear of being judged or rejected, especially in professional settings. She couldn’t identify a clear reason for these feelings but was determined to understand and change them.
Hypnotherapy session I started by guiding Laura into a trance state (which is just a state of heightened relaxation and focus – a bit like when you’re fully absorbed in a film or a book and not distracted at all). Then, using gentle regression techniques, I helped Laura connect with earlier memories associated with her anxious feelings. She was able to access an experience from her childhood where she had felt deeply criticised and dismissed by a teacher in front of her peers. This moment had embedded a belief that she needed to be perfect to be accepted. There was also a memory of when her dad had suddenly left home, leaving her confused and panicked, wondering whether it was her fault. Again, a belief had lodged that terrible things can happen at any moment so she needed to constantly be on high alert.
Using parts work, we identified a younger “part” of Laura still holding onto the fear and shame from those experiences, bringing her anxiety to “warn” her of perceived dangers that as an adult, Laura can absolutely cope with. I guided her to interact compassionately with that part, offering reassurance and acceptance, and then helping her to let go of the unhelpful anxiety response.
Personalised hypnotherapy audio To reinforce the change process, I create a bespoke audio recording for all my clients. At the outset of the process, I spoke to Laura in detail about the outcome she wanted, exactly how she wanted to feel in herself and behave at work and in her relationships. The audio included visualisations designed to strengthen her new sense of inner safety and self-worth. She listened to this daily for several weeks, to help rewire her default response of anxiety, to a default of calm and confidence – in particular around the issues she’d previously had with performance, public-speaking and criticism.
The outcome Over the weeks following the session, while listening to her audio, Laura noticed a significant reduction in her anxiety and a boost to her confidence and self-esteem. She reported feeling more grounded and resilient, particularly in situations that would previously have triggered self-doubt. By reconnecting with her inner child and offering that part the care and support it needed, she was able to release old patterns and develop a healthier internal narrative.
Could this approach help you? This case study highlights how hypnotherapy can uncover hidden emotional blocks and offer a pathway to deep, lasting transformation. If you’re struggling with anxiety, low confidence, or persistent unwanted emotional patterns, hypnotherapy can help you make sense of where those feelings come from – and to change them.
