Major causes of insomnia include anxiety and stress.  These feelings activate your autonomic nervous system, making you feel awake and on edge.

Your subconscious mind is telling you: “I could be in danger, I need to stay alert”. Or it could be telling you “night time is useful thinking time, away from the demands of the day”. But of course this is counter-productive, because you need sleep to perform at your best. 

And when you lie awake at night desperately trying to sleep, it becomes a vicious circle: the more you worry about not sleeping, the more awake and stressed you become.

Everyone’s story is unique and  there are a multitude of underlying causes of insomnia.
