If you’ve ever started a diet feeling motivated, only to find yourself slipping back into old habits a few weeks later, you’re not alone.
For many of my clients, the problem isn’t knowing what a good diet is – it’s breaking free from the automatic patterns and emotional triggers that lead to overeating, sweet cravings, or comfort eating.
That’s where hypnotherapy can make a huge difference. Instead of focusing on calorie counting or restriction, we work directly with the subconscious mind – where habits are formed and stored – to change the root cause of unhelpful eating behaviours.
Why willpower alone doesn’t work
Most diets rely on conscious effort: avoiding certain foods, eating less, exercising more. But our conscious mind is only responsible for about 5% of our behaviours.
The remaining 95% is driven by the subconscious mind – where our beliefs, memories, and emotional associations are stored.
That’s why you can promise yourself “I’ll just have one biscuit” … and find yourself reaching for the whole packet before you’ve even realised.
It isn’t weakness. It isn’t a lack of discipline. It’s your subconscious at work.
How my hypnotherapy programme works
In my weight loss hypnotherapy sessions, I often use a powerful approach called regression. This helps you gently revisit earlier memories and uncover where your current patterns began.
Once we find the root cause, we can reframe it, release the emotional attachment, and break the subconscious link that’s driving cravings or overeating.
I also use parts therapy, which works with the ‘part’ of the subconscious mind that’s driving the emotional eating. This part usually has a positive intention, such as bringing comfort, excitement, or a sense of reward. The problem is that turning to food doesn’t actually deliver the outcome it’s aiming for. In the session, we gently work with this part to find new, healthier ways of meeting its intention, so you get the comfort or pleasure you were seeking – without relying on excess food.
Case study: From childhood comfort to adult cravings
One client I worked with – let’s call her Jane – came to me in her late 40s, frustrated by her constant cravings for sweet foods. No diet had worked for her long-term.
During her hypnotherapy session, Jane’s subconscious took her back to her childhood. Family life was loud, chaotic, and stressful – her parents were busy with work, siblings, and drinking, leaving her feeling unsafe and overlooked.
But she found a little cubby hole in the house where she could hide away. She’d take her colouring books and a pack of biscuits and escape there for moments of calm.
In that quiet, hidden space, Jane’s subconscious linked safety and comfort with eating sugar. And decades later, that link was still driving her cravings.
Once we uncovered the root cause, I guided Jane’s subconscious to break that old connection. By helping her create new, healthier associations, the cravings vanished immediately.
Jane described leaving the session feeling ‘lighter’, like something had shifted and 3 months later, she hadn’t touched any chocolate or unhealthy snacks since our session.
Why change feels effortless after hypnotherapy
When we change the subconscious patterns, there’s no need to rely on willpower or restriction. Clients often describe it as if a switch has been flipped:
- Cravings for snacks vanish
- The ‘need’ to fill up on excess portions disappears
- Food becomes just food — not comfort, reward, or guilt.
This isn’t about fighting yourself. It’s about freeing yourself.
